ON 🌊
Brown Noise
Deep rumbling noise — richer and warmer than white noise. Masks distractions and aids deep focus.
ON 📻
White Noise
Flat spectrum static. Highly effective for blocking sudden sounds and improving sleep onset.
ON 🌸
Pink Noise
Like rainfall or wind. Balanced and natural-feeling — enhances memory consolidation during sleep.
ON 🌅
Ocean Waves
Synthesized rolling waves. The rhythmic rise and fall naturally slows breathing and heart rate.
ON 🌧️
Rain
Gentle, steady rainfall. One of the most universally calming sounds — reduces anxiety within minutes.
ON ⛈️
Rain & Thunder
Rain with distant rolling thunder. Great layered with Rain for a full storm atmosphere.
ON 🧠
Binaural Alpha
10 Hz beat (base 200 Hz). Alpha waves promote relaxed alertness — ideal for calm focus and meditation. Use headphones.
ON 💤
Binaural Theta
6 Hz beat (base 180 Hz). Theta waves support deep relaxation, creativity, and pre-sleep states. Use headphones.
ON 🔔
432 Hz Tone
A gentle sustained tone at 432 Hz — the "natural" tuning frequency preferred by many meditators and sound healers.
ON
528 Hz "Solfeggio"
Known as the "Love Frequency" or "Miracle Tone." Used in sound therapy and meditation traditions worldwide.
ON 🪘
Tibetan Bowl
Synthesized singing bowl tone at 396 Hz with natural harmonics and long decay. Deeply resonant and centering.
ON 🌲
Forest Ambience
Light wind through leaves with soft bird-like tones. Evokes the proven stress-reducing effect of forest environments.

The Science of Sound & Stress

Sound affects the nervous system through multiple pathways — auditory, physiological, and psychological

🧠 How Sound Reaches the Brain

Sound waves travel through the ear to the auditory cortex, but also directly connect to the amygdala (stress center) and limbic system (emotion center) — which is why certain sounds can instantly evoke calm or alarm without conscious thought.

The vagus nerve, which carries parasympathetic signals throughout the body, passes through the larynx and middle ear. Sound literally vibrates this nerve, which is why humming, chanting, and certain tones can activate the relaxation response.

🌊 Why Nature Sounds Work

Research at Brighton and Sussex Medical School found that natural sounds alter brain connectivity in ways that promote relaxation and outward-focused attention (reduced self-referential processing — the "default mode" of worrying).

We evolved over millions of years in natural soundscapes. Our nervous systems interpret natural sounds (water, wind, birdsong) as signals of safety — the absence of threat. Urban noise does the opposite.

📻 Types of Noise

Noise colors differ in their spectral energy distribution:

  • White noise — equal energy at all frequencies; very effective masking
  • Pink noise — more energy in lower frequencies; sounds like rain or waterfall; linked to deeper sleep
  • Brown noise — even more bass-heavy; deep and rumbling; often preferred for ADHD and anxiety

🧠 Binaural Beats Explained

When two slightly different frequencies are played, one in each ear, the brain perceives a third "beat" at the difference frequency. This is called a binaural beat.

Example: 200 Hz left ear + 210 Hz right ear = 10 Hz alpha beat perceived in the brain.

Important: Binaural beats require headphones — they only work when each ear receives a different frequency.

Brainwave States & Their Benefits

Different frequencies promote different mental states — from focused work to deep sleep

BrainwaveFrequencyStateBest For
Gamma (γ)30–100 HzPeak focus, insight, high cognitionComplex problem solving, learning
Beta (β)13–30 HzAlert, active, working consciousnessNormal waking activity — can be stress-producing if too high
Alpha (α)8–13 HzCalm, relaxed, clear-mindedMeditation, stress relief, creative thinking, light relaxation
Theta (θ)4–8 HzDeep relaxation, dreaming, creativityDeep meditation, pre-sleep, REM-adjacent, hypnosis
Delta (δ)0.5–4 HzDeep, dreamless sleepRestorative sleep, healing, unconscious processing

⚠️ A Note on Binaural Beat Research

While binaural beats have passionate advocates and some promising small studies, the scientific evidence is still emerging. Effects vary considerably between individuals. They are safe for most people and many find them highly effective — experiment and see what works for you. Avoid if you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder without consulting a doctor first.

Solfeggio Frequencies

Ancient tonal frequencies used in Gregorian chant and revived in modern sound therapy

🎵

174 Hz — Foundation

Associated with reducing pain and providing a sense of security and love. The lowest of the Solfeggio frequencies.

🎵

285 Hz — Healing

Said to promote cellular repair and rejuvenation. Associated with tissue healing in alternative traditions.

🎵

396 Hz — Liberation

Associated with releasing fear and guilt, turning grief into joy. Used in the Tibetan bowl above.

🎵

417 Hz — Transition

Associated with facilitating change and undoing negative situations. Clears trauma and negative energy.

528 Hz — Transformation

The "Miracle Tone." Associated with DNA repair, love, and deep inner peace. One of the most-studied Solfeggio frequencies.

🎵

639 Hz — Connection

Associated with harmonious relationships, communication, and tolerance. Promotes feelings of love and connection.

Getting the Most from Sound Therapy

🎧

Use Headphones

For binaural beats, headphones are required — each ear must receive a different frequency. For other sounds, headphones improve immersion and block outside noise.

⏱️

Commit to Duration

The relaxation response takes 10–20 minutes to fully activate. Use the sleep timer and give the sounds time to work — don't switch after 2 minutes.

🔀

Layer Sounds

Experiment with combinations: brown noise + rain + tibetan bowl is deeply immersive. Ocean waves + binaural alpha is excellent for meditation.

📵

Minimize Interruptions

Put your phone on Do Not Disturb. Find a comfortable position. Let yourself be fully present with the sound rather than multitasking.
